FRCOphth Exam Details and Pattern

Where are the FRCOphth exams conducted?
  • Part 1 FRCOphth and Part 2 Written Exam – Conducted online via remote proctoring, allowing candidates to sit for them from any country
  • Part 2 FRCOphth Oral and Refraction Certificate Exams – Conducted in the UK, India, Egypt, Singapore, Pakistan, Dubai and Malaysia

Tests basic sciences, optics, and refraction Consists of two multiple-choice papers (each with 90 single best answer questions).Total of 180 questions over two 2-hour papers

A timed skill-based Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with 10 stations

Structured Viva: Five 10-minute stations assessing patient investigations, management, ethics, audit, and evidence-based practice.

OSCE: Five 20-minute clinical stations using a hybrid of real patients and video cases, plus a 10-minute communication skills station.

Part 1 and Part 2 Exams – Conducted online via remote proctoring, allowing candidates to sit for them from any country.

Part 3 Oral and Clinical Exams – Conducted in India, Jordan and Egypt.

Consists of a single multiple-choice paper Total of 160 questions over two 2-hour papers

Consists of a single multiple-choice paper. Total of 180 questions over 2 hours 30 mins. Conducted twice a year and can be taken as an online proctored examination from home.

Structured Oral Examination (Viva): Three 20-minute sections (1-Lids, Oculoplastics and Anterior Segment; 2- Posterior Segment; 3- Neurology, Motility and General Medicine) where two examiners ask questions, potentially using images. 

Clinical Examination(OSCE): Four 12-minute stations (Anterior segment, Posterior segment, Neuro-ophthalmic and Ocular motility disorders, Oculoplastic and Lid disorders) where candidates rotate, examining 2-3 patients per room and discussing findings with
examiners.

Part 1 FRCOphth and Refraction Certificate Exam: Maximum six attempts. Attempts before
August 2013 are not counted

Part 2 FRCOphth Written and Oral Exams: Maximum four attempts

Part 1,2 & 3 FRCS Ophthalmology Exam: Maximum six attempts.
