The Refraction Certificate is an important milestone in the training pathway of ophthalmology trainees pursuing the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). It assesses a candidate’s ability to perform accurate clinical refraction and demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles underlying refractive assessment.
The certificate is usually undertaken during the early years of ophthalmology training and represents a fundamental clinical competency for ophthalmologists. Candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in:
Although the examination focuses on core clinical skills, it is widely recognised that success in the Refraction Certificate examination depends heavily on technique, interpretation, and familiarity with the exam format. Structured preparation is therefore essential.
The PrepMedico Refraction Certificate Intensive Revision Course is a one-day focused programme designed specifically for candidates preparing for the FRCOphth Refraction Certificate examination.
The course is delivered by experienced UK-based faculty who are actively involved in training ophthalmology residents and preparing candidates for postgraduate examinations.
The course is conducted entirely online, allowing candidates from different parts of the world to participate without the need for travel.
Refraction is often perceived as a purely practical examination, and many candidates wonder how such skills can be effectively taught in an online format. Our course is designed specifically to address this challenge. Through step-by-step demonstrations, structured interpretation exercises, simulated refraction scenarios, and interactive case discussions, candidates will be guided through the clinical reasoning process used during the examination.
Rather than simply presenting theory, the sessions focus on simulating real exam situations, helping candidates understand how to interpret retinoscopy findings, approach subjective refraction logically, and arrive at the correct refractive outcome.
The aim is to ensure that candidates develop clarity in the examination technique, confidence in interpreting findings, and familiarity with common exam scenarios.
The course runs over one intensive day of live teaching sessions, covering all the major components required for the Refraction Certificate examination.
Key features include:
All sessions are conducted live online, ensuring a highly interactive learning environment.
Participants will also receive access to recordings of all sessions through the PrepMedico App, allowing them to revisit the material and revise at their own pace before the examination.
